AWAN Data Centre is pleased to announce that we have been awarded the Green Mark (Gold) for New Data Centres category, by BCA-IDA.
The BCA-IDA Green Mark for Data Centres scheme comprises of a dedicated green building rating system for Data Centres (DCs) that is designed to encourage the adoption of energy efficient design, operation and management of data centres. This scheme, jointly developed by Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) with supporting partners from Energy Research Institute @ Nanyang Technological University (ERI@N) and Lawrence Berkeley National Labs (LBNL) in the US; was launched on 10 October 2012, by Ms Grace Fu, Minister in Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Environment and Water Resources and Foreign Affairs at the opening of the International Green Building Conference and BEX Asia.
As Singapore’s commercial data centre space is projected to increase by 50% from 2010 to 2015, it is important to look at how green and sustainable data centres are, given their heavy use of energy. It is estimated that a typical large data centre in Singapore consumes energy equivalent to 10,000 households. Energy cost for data centres is also currently estimated to make up 50% of operating costs. There is thus potential for significant savings for data centres too if they were to go green.
AWAN Data Centre was inducted as part of a pilot scheme organized by BCA-IDA in early 2013. AWAN had to undergo a very stringent & methodical process on energy modeling & efficient water usage, etc, as conducted & assessed by the BCA-IDA Green Mark Assessment Team. As a result, we are awarded the Green Mark (Gold) by BCA-IDA on 10 March 2014.
There are only 4 other Singapore DCs that have been successfully certified under the BCA-IDA Green Mark scheme. They are Credit Suisse, Equinix, Singapore Tourism Board & Abbott Laboratories.
