AWAN Data Centre awarded BCA-IDA Green Mark (Gold) for New Data Centres’ category

AWAN Data Centre is pleased to announce that we have been awarded the Green Mark (Gold) for New Data Centres category, by BCA-IDA.

The BCA-IDA Green Mark for Data Centres scheme comprises of a dedicated green building rating system for Data Centres (DCs) that is designed to encourage the adoption of energy efficient design, operation and management of data centres. This scheme, jointly developed by Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) with supporting partners from Energy Research Institute @ Nanyang Technological University (ERI@N) and Lawrence Berkeley National Labs (LBNL) in the US; was launched on 10 October 2012, by Ms Grace Fu, Minister in Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Environment and Water Resources and Foreign Affairs at the opening of the International Green Building Conference and BEX Asia.

As Singapore’s commercial data centre space is projected to increase by 50% from 2010 to 2015, it is important to look at how green and sustainable data centres are, given their heavy use of energy. It is estimated that a typical large data centre in Singapore consumes energy equivalent to 10,000 households. Energy cost for data centres is also currently estimated to make up 50% of operating costs. There is thus potential for significant savings for data centres too if they were to go green.

AWAN Data Centre was inducted as part of a pilot scheme organized by BCA-IDA in early 2013. AWAN had to undergo a very stringent & methodical process on energy modeling & efficient water usage, etc, as conducted & assessed by the BCA-IDA Green Mark Assessment Team. As a result, we are awarded the Green Mark (Gold) by BCA-IDA on 10 March 2014.

There are only 4 other Singapore DCs that have been successfully certified under the BCA-IDA Green Mark scheme. They are Credit Suisse, Equinix, Singapore Tourism Board & Abbott Laboratories.

AWAN Computing at the forefront of Cloud Computing with Microsoft Windows Server 2012

Microsoft Singapore last week announced the successful deployment of Windows Server 2012 in AWAN Computing Pte. Ltd., a cloud-based infrastructure solutions provider in Singapore. AWAN has deployed Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V in its upcoming Tier 4 data center (as defined by the Uptime Institute Tier Standard) in Singapore. This is the first Windows Server 2012 deployment in Singapore since its launch in early September.

AWAN’s upcoming data center in Singapore, which will be the first Tier 4 data center in Asia, will offer enterprise-class cloud-based solutions, including virtual desktops, Software as a Service (SaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) to local firms and to the many multinational companies that use Singapore as a hub for their Asian operations. As a Tier 4 data center, AWAN has invested in an infrastructure built with full redundancy capabilities to host business critical computer systems at 99.999% availability levels.

AWAN’s IaaS offerings will include servers, storage, and networking infrastructure that customers will use to run virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and server-based applications. AWAN’s SaaS offerings will include Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SharePoint Server, Microsoft Lync Server, and other common applications delivered as a service over the Internet.

Mr Peter Sim, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, AWAN, said: “Choosing Windows Server 2012 is an easy decision as the ability to get 23% higher virtual machine density over other similar OSes means that we can yield 23% higher revenue. Windows Server 2012’s powerful management features also means that we can operate a high-density and high-availability data center with lower operational costs.”

Mr Harish Aitharaju, Lead for Server & Tools Business, Microsoft Singapore, added: “AWAN shares the vision of a cloud enabled server environment that we hold for Windows Server 2012. Benefits such as a high virtual machine density contribute directly to a cloud provider’s bottom line. The reduced capital expenditure and operating costs provide marked improvement for its overall revenue. With this deployment, AWAN has positioned itself as a formidable player in the Asian cloud market.”

AWAN Computing also participated in Microsoft Singapore’s Windows Server 2012 Launch event on 26 September 2012, at the Changi Expo, where we presented our experience and benefits in deploying Windows Server 2012 & System Center 2012, to an 1,000 strong audience, consisting of Microsoft’s customers & partners.

Mr Bill Hilf, Microsoft’s global GM for Windows Azure Product Management, the keynote speaker for this event, noted that a discussion on Windows Server 2012 is more about a cloud OS (operating system) than anything else. “Two years ago when I talked to the customers the discussion used to revolve around ‘whether’ they would be going into the cloud. Now the discussion is more on ‘when’ they would go into the cloud.”. He added that Microsoft was uniquely placed to help customers on their journey into the cloud. “They can have the cloud in their data centres, in our own Azure cloud or in one of our partner’s cloud like in the case of Awan Computing”.

Mr Amit Roy Choudhury, Technology Editor for The Business Times, interviewed AWAN’s CEO, Mr Ivan Tan and VP, Sales & Marketing, Mr Peter Sim, as well as Mr Bill Hilf, Microsoft’s global GM for Windows Azure Product Management and Mr Harish Aitharaju, Lead for Server & Tools Business, Microsoft Singapore, during this launch event. The below is an article by Mr Choudhury, which was published on 8 October 2012, in The Business Times.

AWAN Computing shares successful Microsoft Windows Server 2012 deployment in Microsoft APAC Analyst Summit

On 27 September 2012, AWAN Computing shared its experience in successfully deploying Microsoft Windows Server 2012 in its cloud-based infrastructure in its Tier 4 data centre, with more than 60 regional analysts, at the Sentosa Resorts. These regional analysts came from leading IT research firms such as IDC, Gartner, Frost & Sullivan, Forrester Research, Canalys, etc.

During this session, AWAN  elaborated on its decision to deploy Windows Server 2012 in its cloud-based infrastructure in our Tier 4 data centre (as defined by the Uptime Institute Tier Standard). A Tier 4 data center is designed to host business-critical computer systems and has fully redundant subsystems and compartmentalized security zones controlled by biometric access. It also has its own active-active 2N power co-generation plants to deliver a fault-tolerant infrastructure with availability levels of 99.999 percent.
AWAN Computing will provide infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings to local firms and to the many multinational companies that use Singapore as a hub for their Asian operations. AWAN’s IaaS offerings will include servers, storage, and networking infrastructure that customers will use to run virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and server-based applications. AWAN SaaS offerings will include Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SharePoint Server, Microsoft Lync Server, and other common applications delivered as a service over the Internet.

“We learned that Windows Server 2012 offered greater scalability, density, reliability, and management than our first choice,” says Mohammed Meraj bin Malik, Technology Manager for AWAN Computing. “The capabilities of Windows Server 2012 fit the needs of a cloud provider better than our first choice did.”

“We’ve always had a good working relationship with Microsoft, and from the business side of things, I felt that our partnership with Microsoft was critical and strategic,” Mr Peter Sim, VP, Sales & Marketing, adds. “We’re a small company, and we felt that the long-term cloud vision that Microsoft supports aligned well with ours.”

By building its new data center with Windows Server 2012, AWAN Computing gains tremendous scalability, lower capital and operating costs, unprecedented availability, and a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
